Article Summary
When prescribing compounded topical or nasal medications, the delivery vessel matters as much as the formulation. A cream dispensed via a metered-click pump delivers a very different volume per actuation than the same strength in a dropper bottle. To support accurate prescribing and patient counseling, Empower Pharmacy has published a new Vessel & Metered-Dose Reference Guide, now available in the Knowledge Hub under Medication Instructions and linked directly to applicable product pages.

What the Guide Covers
The guide is a quick-reference chart covering the dispensing vessels used across our topical and nasal product lines. For each vessel type, it outlines:
- Total vessel volume – how much medication the container holds
- Metered-dose mechanism – how a dose is actuated (e.g., a click, rotation, spray, or pump)
- Volume delivered per dose
- Approximate doses per vessel, including overage where applicable
Vessel types included are click pen dispensers, twist-and-click dispensers (where a partial turn produces a click, and click count can be adjusted to titrate dose), dropper bottles, brush-applicator vials, metered nasal spray pumps, and pump dispensers.
Note that brush-applicator vials, used for products like antifungal nail solutions, are not mechanically metered; application volume varies by use, which the guide flags explicitly so it isn’t mistaken for a fixed dose.
Why This Matters for Prescribing
Vessel mechanics directly inform several clinical decisions:
- Dose titration – For dispensers like the twist-and-click pen, click count can be adjusted to reach different target doses from the same formulation. Knowing the volume per click allows for precise titration.
- Days’ supply and refill timing – Total doses per vessel, combined with your prescribed frequency, determines how long a fill should last. This is useful when setting refill intervals or troubleshooting early refill requests.
- Patient counseling – Patients are often unfamiliar with click-pen or metered-spray dispensers. Referencing the same terms and mechanics used in this guide can make chairside or telehealth counseling more consistent with what patients see on the product page.
- Cross-checking prescribed dose against delivery volume – Because per-dose volumes vary meaningfully by vessel type (for example, 0.05 mL per click on a click pen versus 0.25-1.00 mL per click on a twist-and-click dispenser), this guide offers a fast way to confirm that a prescribed dose aligns with what the vessel can actually deliver.
Where to Find It
The guide lives in the Knowledge Hub under the Medication Instructions topic and is linked from the product pages for any medication using one of these vessel types, so it’s accessible at the point of prescribing or patient discussion.
This is intended as a quick clinical reference, not a substitute for the full prescribing information or package insert for a given product. If you have questions about a specific formulation, vessel, or dosing scenario, please reach out to our Medical Affairs team.
